Once you start seeing everyone as a certain level of consciousness, you will stop comparing and judging. Once you start accepting others with no judgment—rather with love and respect—people will stop irritating, disappointing or upsetting you.

So who is observing us while we are making the wrong choices? Whom does this inner voice belong to? An Observer is our Soul, our Higher Self, an extended level of quantum consciousness beyond pride level. Thus, the life of each of us is controlled by an Observer—or Soul—that is interpreting reality and making choices that are already predetermined by our Karma. Bringing new opportunities to the lower level of consciousness will not change or help anything, as we can only attract things that are similar to our frequency.

So our goal in life is to learn to accurately interpret our circumstances and read others. This way, we can change our Karma and improve our life by making better choices. But most of us do not live in the world of the Soul, and therefore have to rely on coincidence to unravel the Will of the universe. At a quantum level, consciousness expresses its free will. The Observer is full of spontaneity. He goes with the flow. Whatever happens, he watches. He simply bears witness to the event.

This is where the flow becomes spontaneous. Spontaneity means to welcome opportunity and possibility. To be spontaneous is to allow life to happen; not to obstruct it, not to hinder it, not to distract it, not to take it in some other direction where it was not going on its own. Once the mind becomes too dominant, it does not allow any spontaneity. When the mind gains too much power, it starts to control and direct instead of moving with the flow.

It becomes dictatorial. It does not allow spontaneity to utter a single word. Everything that we do and think is the byproduct of how we perceive information; in other words, our reality bias.

This implies that by adequately reordering our perceptions, we can affect the outcome of everything in our lives. Your past is just your current interpretation of the events in your life. This interpretation depends on the state of your energy field and the level of your consciousness at the given moment. In quantum physics, the behavior of a particle depends on the Observer. Your interpretation of your past and current circumstances is very similar: it is also dependent upon the Observer called your Soul or your Higher Self.

The Law of Attraction is not about wishing for what you think you want. It is about becoming the person you choose to be. As you start to embody your truest self, you will begin to naturally attract the people and circumstances which match your authentic energy. Your relationships are a mirror that reflects back to you an honest image of who you are.

These images can teach you valuable lessons about yourself and expose your vulnerable blind spots. When you look into the mirror of your relationships, you have an opportunity to grow and jump into a new, expanded level of consciousness. A date one month, another the next. A lack of interest on her part, a lack of interest on mine. Before I knew it, I was going on three or four dates a week.

Each one happened at a bar, which is not a bad place for a first date. After a while, I got tired of explaining, over and over again, how journalists come up with story ideas—by going on online dates, of course!

The whole romantic process was starting to feel forced, perfunctory, dehumanizing and, yes, expensive. Hates trashy romance novels. This is a major, and ridiculously exhausting, shift in how we mate as a species, the biggest, it seems, since birth control. The bar is simply much lower than it used to be. The vulnerability—and the spontaneity that goes along with it—in romantic connection is diminished; online dating may make you a more active dater, but it also turns you into a more passive romancer.

Probably very, very few. A former colleague of mine got married to a man she met on OkCupid, and there are a number of Tinder success stories. The swiping and the searching is, for the most part, mindless I would swipe right on almost every girl, just to see who was interested in me—a form of self-validation.

On OkCupid, you can pay one dollar for a boost to promote your profile to other users, which I used incessantly, as though it were a slot machine. Creepy, right? Illustration by Samantha Hahn. The messages are different.

I spent so many hours crafting notes to so many female strangers that I began to worry I might burn myself out as a journalist. Not even one more date just to see if you were wrong? I met at a bar in the East Village. She was great. I would have gone out with her again in a second.

She was pretty and calm and comfortable with herself, and she told me, without compunction, that she liked veal. I like girls who like veal. A couple of days later, I asked to see her again.

She got back to me right away. Over the course of five hours and many, many pints, we talked about a lot of private stuff—or, more accurately, she did—and by the end of the night we were making out at the bar. By that point, I was used to it. For the most part, though, if I remember correctly, I mostly just sat there and listened and talked and rubbed my hand nervously through my hair as I sipped beer.

And to hear other online daters describe their worst dates, I was doing O. You never know how people are going to be when you meet them offline. What we react to in a person is behavior, but what we see in a profile are attitudes and preferences and background characteristics. Interests may point to values, of course, but it takes a while to figure someone out, and a first date may not even offer enough time to do that adequately.

Judgment also runs so high on a first date—especially one arranged online—that sometimes a dater will dismiss a potential partner when he or she might have been a good match. She met a man at a bar who, online, had said he worked in securities.

I once met a pretty and well-dressed Eugene Lang student at a bar in Union Square who said she liked Anatole Broyard, one of my favorite writers. She pronounced his name A-na-TOL-ee BROY-ard, though, which pissed me off, for some reason. Still, there are those who find romance after months or years of toiling. com—before she found a man she is happy with about four months ago via OkCupid. Once I accidentally copied and pasted the URL of a New Yorker piece by Nick Paumgarten into the message box on OkCupid and sent it off to an unsuspecting girl.
